He writes in his reminiscences "With the Century" Vol. 8 (Continuing Edition): "The gist of my speech that day was great national unity".

He, basing himself on the Juche idea, elucidated the national problem from a new angle and put forward the unique idea of the great national unity in his early years. He thoroughly carried out the idea in the long historical course of struggle to liberate the country, build a new country and reunify the country, thus creating a brilliant example of the great national unity.

After the liberation of the country he founded the Party as a party for the working people and convened the Joint Conference of Representatives of Political Parties and Social Organizations in North and South Korea in Pyongyang in April Juche 37 (1948), thus accomplishing the historical cause of rallying political parties and patriotic forces of all strata as one.

He, who had poured his heart and soul into the great national unity throughout his life, authored the work "10-point Programme of the Great Unity of the Whole Nation for the Reunification of the Country" in April 1993 even at the last moments of his life and thus indicated the patriotic way for national unity and reunification.

Under the leadership of General Secretary Kim Jong Il the President's idea of the great national unity is shining as the banner of patriotism for the reunification that the entire nation should uphold.

Kim Jong Il made public famous works "Let Us Carry Out the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung's Instructions for National Reunification" in August 1997 and "Let Us Reunify the Country Independently and Peacefully through the Great Unity of the Entire Nation" in April 1998, which carry the President's idea of the great national unity. He, in the works, emphasized that the Korean nation will certainly achieve the great national unity under the banner of the national reunification, noting that the internal force of the national reunification is the Korean nation and its might lies in the great national unity.

The Korean people erected the Monument to President Kim Il Sung's Handwritings from His Address at a Rally to Welcome Him on His Triumphant Return to the Homeland and the mural "Cheers of Whole Nation" on October 14, 1987 in commemoration of the historical day when the President made the address at the rally.
