The championships brought together excellent players from more than 10 countries and regions including the DPRK. It will be held, divided into juvenile (13-17) and junior (15-20) categories.

Attending the ceremony were Jon Kwang Ho, vice-premier of the Cabinet and chairman of the state preparatory committee for the championships, Cha Hui Rim, chairman of the Pyongyang City People's Committee and chairman of the organizing committee of the championships, Hwang Sang Ho, vice-minister of Physical Culture and Sports, Kim Kwang Dok, secretary general of the Weightlifting Association, officials concerned and Pyongyangites.

Present there were Mohammed Hasan Jalood, secretary general of the International Weightlifting Federation, Boossaba Yodbangtoey, secretary general of the Asian Weightlifting Federation, and other members of the AWF and judges, and teams of different countries and regions.

Mohammed Hasan Jalood and Boossaba Yodbangtoey expressed their thanks to the DPRK government for its positive cooperation and efforts to hold the championships, and said that the sporting event would be a good opportunity of promoting friendship among the participants in the sporting event.

Cha Hui Rim warmly welcomed the participants, expressed the belief that the championships would be conducive to developing the weightlifting in Asia and declared the championships open.

An art performance was given by artistes and students of the DPRK at the opening ceremony.

The championships will start on October 21.
