Magnolia, National Flower of DPRK
Pyongyang, February 12 (KCNA) -- Magnolia, the national flower of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, has a long history.

It can be well evidenced by historical relics and records.

Fossils belonging to magnolia genus were discovered at various relics in the period of the Paleolithic Age like Komunmoru relics and Taehyong-dong relics. Such facts prove that plants belonging to magnolia genus have naturally grown in Korea from more than one million years ago, the early stage of human development.

Kang Hui An, a painter and scholar of the 15th century, described in detail about magnolia, together with various species of flowers, in his book "Yanghwasorok" dealing with ecological characters and cultivation technologies of flowers.

"Taedongunbugunok" written by Kwon Mun Hae, a government official and scholar in the period of feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), carries Kim Si Sup's poem on magnolia.

Kim in his poem wrote that the leaf of magnolia is almost the same as that of persimmon tree and its flower is as that of lotus.

The national classic "Sinjungdonggukyojisungnam" published in the 16th century wrote that magnolia is in full bloom in summer and the air is laden with scent of magnolia.

All the historical relics and records showed that the Korean people have loved magnolia for its ecological and morphological characteristics from long ago.
