Kim Won Gyun, World-famous Composer
Pyongyang, May 4 (KCNA) -- The immortal revolutionary hymn "Song of General Kim Il Sung" is one of songs beloved by all the DPRK people and even foreigners.

The song was composed by world-famous composer Kim Won Gyun, born in Kangwon Province when Korea was under the colonial rule of the Japanese imperialists.

Though he had talents for music, he had to make his living by doing rough work from his childhood.

It was only after the country's liberation from Japan's colonial rule that he could develop his talents. At that time, he wrote and composed song "March of Korea" as his maiden work.

Later, he had become well-known among Koreans by composing the popular hymn "Song of General Kim Il Sung" which had greatly encouraged the Korean people to build a new society.

He had created a number of famous works like "The Patriotic Song" (national anthem), "Our Supreme Commander" and "Glory to the Workers' Party of Korea" and took part in creating "Sea of Blood"-type revolutionary opera.

In his lifetime, he had served as a composer of the National Art Theatre, rector of the Pyongyang University of Music, vice-chairman of the Central Committee of the Musicians Union of Korea, leader of the Phibada Opera Troupe and concurrent chairman of the Musicians Union of Korea and chairman of the Korean Traditional Music Committee.

At a banquet, leader Kim Jong Il said Kim Won Gyun could be considered to complete his lifetime goal only by composing "Song of General Kim Il Sung" except the national anthem.

Last year, the respected Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un took a measure to hold a concert to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Kim Won Gyun.
