The pass makes the service personnel and people of the DPRK recall the undying feats of leader Kim Jong Il who made a ceaseless inspection of military units for Songun to defend the destiny of the country all his life.

The pass, 677 meters above the sea level, is steep. In the days of his Songun revolutionary leadership, Kim Jong Il went over the pass on 18 occasions to inspect frontline posts on Height 1211, Mts Jihye and Oun , Jikdong Pass and Height 351 regardless of bad weather.

One day of March Juche 85 (1996), he personally drove the car on the pass. Looking round the monument to the revolutionary activities of President Kim Il Sung on the pass, he said that Chol Pass is a significant place where Kim Il Sung left his footmarks and showed loving care for the servicepersons.

When soldiers of a frontline unit earnestly asked him not to pass Chol Pass, he said that he cannot receive a diploma of Chol Pass till the day of final victory.
