Production of Chestnut Saplings Put on Intensive Basis
Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The production of high-yielding large chestnut saplings was put on an intensive basis in the DPRK, as part of the efforts for turning the whole country into a thick woodland, greenery and orchard.

In the past, it took 3 years to produce saplings by grafting scion on one year-old rootstock, which is low in the rate of rooting.

The Unsan Chestnut Nursery together with scientists of the Economic Forest Institute under the Academy of Forest Science completed a new method to produce saplings by grafting caulicle on radicle.

This method makes it possible to mass-produce grafted saplings in less production area and save manpower.

It is said that full-grown large chestnut tree is about 3 meters high and ten times higher than existing ones in per-hectare yield.

The nursery is going to produce hundreds of thousands of saplings this year.
