Pyongyang, August 2 (KCNA) -- Archery is encouraged as one of major sports events in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, especially popular among children as a folk game.

The Korean bow has a long history.

Koreans began to use bow in the period of Ancient Korea (early 30th century B.C.-108 B.C.). In the period of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668) this bow was described as Maekgung as neighboring countries called the Koguryo people Maek tribe.

At that time, bow was made of buffalo horn and cow's tendon. Its bowshot was longer than other countries'.

From old times the Koreans had given importance to military affairs and got famed as a nation with high bowmanship.

King Tongmyong, the founder of Koguryo, was known to be good at archery. So, he was called Ko Ju Mong (meaning in Korean a good bow-and-arrow man).

According to historical records, a general of Koguryo hit with an arrow one of eyes of the head of foreign aggression troops in a battle of defending walled Anshi to dispirit the enemies.
