DPRK Pays Efforts to Protection of Migratory Birds
Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The DPRK government has given importance to the protection of migratory birds.

With the 2016 World Migratory Birds Day as an occasion, an information campaign was launched in the country to raise awareness of the protection of migratory birds among the local people.

The theme for the day is "…and when the skies fall silent? Stop the illegal killing, taking and trade!"

Kim Song Ho, section chief of the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, told KCNA:

The DPRK government has long taken steps to protect migratory birds in tidelands, seashores and islets of the country.

In recent months, experts were dispatched to Rason, Ongjin, Sin Islet and other areas, home to migratory birds, to make on-site survey and then take necessary measures.

Big efforts have gone to preserving diverse ecologies in more than 30 migratory bird reserves in Rason, Kumya, Sin Islet and other areas.

The Rason migratory bird reserve was listed as a sanctuary of the IUCN.

The Mundok migratory bird reserve in the west coastal area serves as one of stopovers for migratory birds. Inhabiting this reserve are such rare birds as cranes and snipes.
