In recent years, efficient apparatuses were installed at environmental observation posts throughout the country to take automatic and real-time measurement of sulfurous acid gas in the air and display, record and transmit those measurements.

A number of sci-tech problems were settled, among them the technique of collecting gas and dust at industrial furnaces and boilers, additive for decreasing exhaust fumes from automobiles, technology and materials for purifying industrial waste water and the recycling of waste materials.

Meanwhile, settling ponds have been reconstructed or repaired and industrial waste water treatment plants cleaned out in different parts of the country to prevent river and marine pollution.

Law on Environmental Protection was adopted in the DPRK on April 9, Juche 75 (1986).
