Protection of Goshawk Active in DPRK
Pyongyang, March 4 (KCNA) -- Sangdol-ri and Sinthae-ri in Toksong County, South Hamgyong Province of the DPRK have been recently set as a sanctuary for goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), its national bird, as part of the efforts to protect and breed it.

Now forest resource is well conserved in the area where is abundant in 30-40 meter-high pine trees, larches and poplars habitable for goshawk.

Meanwhile, a group consisting of over 10 squads was organized by the Zoology Research Institute under the State Academy of Sciences to develop research into this bird.

In the recent one year, those squads confirmed the range of goshawks in the northern and mid-western parts and Kangwon Province of the country and made successes in ascertaining the morphological characters of goshawk and its breeding behavior.

A research into five goshawks hatched out in July 2015 assures that it is possible to grow goshawk artificially.

The research group is planning to complete the methods of artificially bringing up and taming goshawks in the on-going 70-day campaign.
