Rodong Sinmun Marks Day of March First Popular Uprising
Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) -- Rodong Sinmun Tuesday in an editorial dedicated to the 97th anniversary of the March First Popular Uprising calls on the Koreans in the north and the south and abroad to turn out in patriotic struggle to pave a wide avenue to independent reunification under the uplifted banner of national independence against outsiders.

The editorial goes on:

The March First Popular Uprising was a nationwide anti-Japanese patriotic resistance in which the Korean nation rose to protest the Japanese imperialists' harsh colonial rule in order to take back the usurped sovereignty of the Korean nation.

The Japanese imperialists illegally occupied Korea early in the 20th century and enforced mediaeval, colonial and fascist rule and deprived the Korean nation of all rights and imposed upon the Korean people the destiny of statelessness.

Bitter anger and resentment of the Korean nation erupted on March 1, 1919 as a nationwide anti-Japanese resistance.

The protestors indomitably fought against the brutal suppression by the Japanese imperialist army and police who wielded rifles and bayonets. The anti-Japanese struggle arose even in the overseas Koreans residential areas.

The March First Popular Uprising left a serious lesson that the struggle of the popular masses should be led by an outstanding leader if sovereignty of the nation and independence of the country are to be achieved and that people should fight the aggressors armed to the teeth with the armed forces.

Though nearly a century passed since the popular uprising, outside forces persist in the criminal moves to invade Korea and the national sovereignty of the south Korean people is cruelly violated.

The editorial calls on all the fellow countrymen to hold fast to the three charters for national reunification and the north-south declarations associated with the noble lives of the peerlessly great men as programmes for reunification common to the nation and turn out in the drive for implementing them.
