Turtle Ship, World's First Iron-clad Warship
Pyongyang, February 23 (KCNA) -- The turtle ship was the world's first iron-clad warship built by Korean people, which showed off its great power in sea battles against Japanese invaders during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598).

Its prow was shaped like a head of dragon and its hull and poop were covered with testudinate iron-clad, which resembled a turtle in shape. At that time, the ship was able to withstand any gunfire.

As its iron-clad was stuck with awls and daggers, it was impossible for the enemies to climb on it.

The turtle ship was armed with scores of cannons and could fire in every direction through loopholes. And it was propelled by 10 oars on each side and could also take out a sail at a high speed.

The turtle ship, which antedated the first European iron-clad ship by nearly 200 years, sank a number of enemy battleships during the war.

Drama "Admiral Ri Sun Sin" has been recently put on the stage in Pyongyang to deal with a great devotion made by Admiral Ri (1545-1598) to building the ship.
