Korea's Custom of Making Kimchi Listed as World Heritage
Pyongyang, December 18 (KCNA) -- The Korean nation's custom of making kimchi was registered as a typical intangible cultural heritage of humanity at the 10th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO held in Namibia from Nov. 30 to Dec. 4.

In this regard, Ro Chol Su, deputy director of the DPRK's National Authority for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, told KCNA:

The news delights the people in the DPRK like last year that witnessed the registration of Korea's folk song "Arirang" as a world intangible heritage.

Kimchi has a long history of its development in Korea. From olden times, Koreans have made kimchi (pickled vegetables) for subsidiary foods to be taken in winter and spring.

Now, it is a custom of Koreans to take kimchi in daily diet, regarding it as a must dish.

Kimchi is diverse in variety and method of making for every season. Its variety includes watery kimchi made of sliced radish and diced radish pickles for late spring, diced cucumber and radish pickles and kimchi made of parsley for summer and whole cabbage kimchi for autumn.

The Korean people pay special attention to preparing kimchi for winter season in particular.
