The team was founded on October 15, Juche 61 (1972) and is based in Phyongsong City, South Phyongan Province.

After its foundation, it won over 5,580 medals in different domestic contests and more than 110 in international games.

Typical of its aces is Kim Son Hui who took the first place in women's 10,000m and 5,000m races of the 2015 Vietnam International Track and Field Tournament.

The team has paid deep attention to putting training and instruction on a scientific basis as well as modernizing sports apparatuses.
