History of Sports Development Adorned with Gold Medals
Pyongyang, October 31 (KCNA) -- It was on November 1, Juche 34 (1945) that the Sports Union of North Korea was formed.

Since then, the DPRK has made praiseworthy progress in the field of sports under the wise leadership of peerlessly great persons. It can be well evidenced by over 100 gold medals the DPRK athletes have won in world championships and Olympic games.

In the 1960s, Ri Hung Chon renewed the world records for two times in men's weightlifting and Sin Kum Dan set new world records for 11 times in international women's track and field tournaments.

In the 1970s, Ri Ho Jun brought the first Olympic gold medal to the country by taking the first place in a shooting event, Pak Yong Sun won the women's singles title in two consecutive world table-tennis championships and Ku Yong Jo emerged as a typical boxer.

In the 1980s and 1990s, many gold medalists, including twice world champion and twice holder of the Olympic gold medal, had been produced in such events as wrestling, weightlifting, shooting and heavy gymnastics.

In the new century, too, signal successes have been achieved.

The DPRK girls won victories for three times respectively in the Asian Women's Football Championships and women's football event of the Asian Games and took the title in two consecutive EAFF Women's East Asia Cup and in FIFA U-20 and U-17 women's world cups.

Among the well-known world champions produced by the DPRK are Judoist Kye Sun Hui, wrestler Yang Kyong Il , boxers Ri Jong Hyang and Yun Kum Ju, weightlifters Kim Un Kuk and Om Yun Chol and gymnast Hong Un Jong.

The DPRK athletes added glory to the country by clinching gold medals in the 52nd ITTF World Championships (individual events) and the 16th FINA World Championships.

Over the past 70 years, many athletes including gold medalists were awarded Kim Il Sung Prize and Kim Jong Il Prize, the titles of the DPRK Hero and Labor Hero and the titles of People's Athlete and Merited Athlete.
