"State-compiled Textbooks" Protested in S. Korea
Pyongyang, October 23 (KCNA) -- CBS of south Korea commented that the controversial "system of introducing state-compiled textbooks" is a copy of the system introduced in the period of the Park Chung-Hee's "yusin" dictatorship more than four decades ago.

The paper Hangyore on Oct. 19 said that over 2,000 history teachers of primary, secondary and high schools across south Korea voiced opposition to the introduction of the "system", refusing to write and edit textbooks.

38 history teachers of 9 universities in Taegu and North Kyongsang Province boycotted the writing and edition of textbooks from Oct. 14, in particular.

At least 70 history teachers of 13 universities in Seoul made public a statement on Oct. 18 in which they termed the introduction of the "system" a tyrannical action for trampling down the democratic achievements made so far.

Similar actions took place at 10 universities in Kyonggi Province, Inchon and Taejon.

More than 600 elders and activists of civic and public bodies released a declaration on the situation in protest against the "system."
