S. Koreans Honor Memory of Martyrs of Kwangju Popular Uprising
Pyongyang, May 19 (KCNA) -- A night vigil for honoring the memory of the martyrs of the Kwangju popular uprising took place in Kwangju on May 17, the day before the 35th anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju Popular Uprising in south Korea.

It was attended by Kwangju citizens, workers, students and bereaved families of the Ferry Sewol disaster, more than 7,000 in all.

People of different social standings thronged Kumnamro where Kwangju citizens had staged fierce battles against harsh oppression by the martial law army 35 years ago.

Then there took place a memorial service outside the former South Jolla Provincial Office building.

There was an art performance whose numbers portrayed how the Kwangju citizens fought in May 1980, chanting slogans "independence, democracy and reunification."
