Rodong Sinmun Calls for Resistance for Achieving Independence, Democracy and Reunification
Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- The Kwangju Popular Uprising in 1980 was a bloody anti-U.S., anti-fascist patriotic struggle staged by the south Korean people to put an end to the U.S. colonial rule, ferocious fascist military dictatorial rule of the Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo cliques, says Rodong Sinmun Monday in an article.

The uprising dealt a telling blow at the protracted military fascist dictatorship, shook the U.S. colonial rule to its very foundation and made a strong storm of movement for independence, democracy and reunification sweep across south Korea, the article notes, and goes on:

It is an urgent task required by the times to wage a dynamic patriotic struggle for achieving independence, democracy and reunification in south Korea by carrying forward the spirit of the uprisers.

It is 35 years since the uprising but the desire of the brave participants in the resistance to see an independent and democratic new society and achieve the reunification of the country has not yet come true.

The dignity and sovereignty, democracy and human rights of the south Korean people are still mercilessly infringed upon by outsiders and traitors.

The reality goes to clearly prove that the south Korean people can neither enjoy their freedom and democracy nor defend their right to existence as long as the aggressors and traitors kowtowing to them are allowed to go scot-free.

The resistance of the south Korean people for independence, democracy and reunification has not yet come to an end.

The south Korean people should get united as one in the struggle by carrying forward the spirit of the Kwangju uprisers who staged heroic death-defying actions, unyielding to injustice and dictatorship, and thus put an end to the fascist dictatorial rule of the U.S. and its lackeys and build a new democratic society without fail.
