DPRK Red Cross Society Marks Its 68th Birthday
Pyongyang, October 18 (KCNA) -- Today marks the 68th anniversary of the DPRK Red Cross Society, which was founded in October Juche 35 (1946) on the initiative of President Kim Il Sung.

Since its birth the DPRK Red Cross Society has creditably performed its mission as an active assistant to the government by conducting such works as health and hygienic, relief and anti-epidemic activities, program for repatriation of Japan-resident Koreans, and humanitarian assistance to compatriots in the south of Korea and other countries.

At present, the Society is playing a major role in the nationwide projects for disaster prevention and contingency planning, rehabilitation and development.

It also helps the state health service organs' work to prevent various diseases and improve the inhabitants' health under the Workers' Party of Korea's policy of preventive medicine. And it, in cooperation with the State Academy of Sciences and other institutions, conducts such works conducive to the improvement of people's livelihood as construction of greenhouses and mushroom farms and introduction of the agro-forestry management.

As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the DPRK Red Cross Society has strengthened the friendly and cooperative relationship with international Red Cross bodies and other countries' Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations. It joined the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on May 11, 1956.
