Mural Paintings of Koguryo Dynasty Preserving Original Colors
Pyongyang, October 7 (KCNA) -- The world people are admiring the mural paintings in tombs of Koguryo Dynasty (B.C. 277-A.D. 668) as they have preserved their original colors.

The paintings, a reflection of wisdom and artistic talents of Koguryo people, vividly show the customs of the age. They are considered to be the oldest among pictorial heritages of the Korean nation, holding the noteworthy position in the history of the Oriental paintings.

In this regard, KCNA met Mun Jong Ung, a creator of the Mansudae Art Studio.

Mun said:

The murals were painted with natural aqueous colors, with which the fine artistes of the Koguryo Dynasty gave a vivid and realistic depiction of all matters and phenomena. The coloration of the dynasty had been improved throughout the Middle Ages, and thus developed into the character of traditional coloration.

The mural paintings, which are diverse in content, astonishing in idea, rich in pictorial hints and high in painting skills, laid a firm foundation for the development of Korean paintings in the Middle Ages. And they had also exerted favorable influence on the pictorial development in neighboring countries of Koguryo, including Japan.

They were listed by UNESCO as one of the world's cultural heritages.
