Leader Kim Jong Il advanced this policy and had made all possible efforts for the development of the national music.

He stressed the need to create popular and refined songs on the basis of traditional melodies to suit the Korean people's sentiments and modern aesthetic sense, as taught by President Kim Il Sung.

In December Juche 79 (1990) he made public a work "On Improving the Musical Creation and Dissemination", underlining that every song should be created in Korean style as famous music of the times perfect in ideological content and artistry.

And he, in another work "Theory of Musical Art", gave a clear-cut exposition of such problems for the development of national music as retaining the peculiarities and tune of folksongs and re-depicting those songs.

Under his meticulous guidance, a lot of music pieces in the style of ballad were created one after another, including songs "Arirang of Prosperity" and "Nilliri for Songun".

He also paid deep attention to developing the Juche-based symphony on the principle of arranging folk and other popular songs with a combination of traditional and Western musical instruments.

He guided the work to improve the national musical instruments, too.

Kim Jong Il's feats for the development of the national music are now being carried forward by supreme leader Kim Jong Un.
