DPRK Hit by Severe Drought
Pyongyang, July 3 (KCNA) -- Drought has persisted for a long while in some areas of the DPRK, badly affecting agriculture.

In June there were rainfalls in most areas of the country, but the precipitation stood at 4 to 20 mm in North and South Hwanghae provinces, Nampho City and some areas of South Hamgyong Province.

The areas hit by severe drought are North and South Hwanghae, South Hamgyong, Kangwon and North and South Phyongan provinces. They include Kwail, Jangyon, Ongjin, Thaethan, Yonan, Ryongyon, Kangryong, Unchon and Sinwon counties of South Hwanghae Province, Sariwon and Songrim cities and Junghwa County of North Hwanghae Province, Hamhung City, Jongphyong, Rakwon, Hamju and Pukchong counties of South Hamgyong Province, Wonsan City and Anbyon and Kosan counties of Kangwon Province, Sinuiju City and Thaechon, Pakchon and Unsan counties of North Phyongan Province and Jungsan and Taedong counties and Onchon County of Nampho City in South Phyongan Province.

In particular, farm fields in North and South Hwanghae provinces, the nation's granary, were seriously damaged by drought. A sustained campaign to combat drought has been conducted, but paddy and non-paddy fields are still getting dried due to the persistent drought and high temperature.

The weather forecast said that downpour and shower would be expected in some areas of the country till July 8, but it is not likely to prevent the damage in the drought-plagued areas.
