New Species of Poplar Cultivated in DPRK
Pyongyang, April 8 (KCNA) -- The Thremmatology Institute under the Academy of Forestry in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has cultivated a new species of Tumangang Poplar, high in economic and landscape value.

The DPRK boasts of various species of poplar trees, including Pyongyang Poplar, Taedonggang Poplar and Kangson Poplar, but most of them grow in the areas under 500 meters above the sea level.

Highly resistant to cold weather, the new species of tree grows 2 to 2.5 times faster than Pyongyang Poplar in the central northern area of the country.

When its cutting is planted, the rate of rooting reaches above 95 percent with its cultivation possible even in the areas under 800 meters above the sea level.

When forests are created with these trees it is possible to produce 250 cubic meters of pulp timber per hectare within five years.

Its leaves, with 20 percent of crude protein, can be used as feed for domestic animals.
