This annual event reflects the desire and will of the world people to celebrate February 16, the birthday of leader Kim Jong Il, as a holiday common to humankind.

Taking part in the current festival are figure skaters from the DPRK, Russia, Latvia, Belarus, Italy, the Czech Republic and Serbia who have proven successful in international and domestic tournaments.

Its opening ceremony took place on Saturday with a demonstration performance which well represented deep reverence for leader Kim Jong Il.

In particular, skaters of Russia, Serbia and Latvia showed movements of high technique, performing to the melodies of such Korean songs as "the General Star" and "Boundless Is Our Yearning".

Samuel Contesti, an Italian skater, told KCNA he was pleased to attend the festival in the DPRK, adding that its citizens are very kind and the festival organization is admirable. He was moved to witness the people's deep interest in the festival and wanted to know well about the DPRK, touring different parts of Pyongyang, he said.
