S. Korean Broadcasting Service Deplores Disappearance of Mother Tongue
Pyongyang, October 11 (KCNA) -- South Korean KBS on Wednesday deplored the reality of south Korean society where the mother tongue is disappearing.

So many unidentified expressions of mother tongue are used in society that interpretation is required to explain them and it is hard to understand conversations among young people, KBS noted.

The same can be said of the situation at the public institutions which should take the lead in keeping the mother tongue alive, it said, and went on:

Chinese characters and foreign words are dominant in the official documents of the ministries and agencies of the "government".

According to an analysis of at least 3 000 documents of a public institution made by a civic organization, they contained more than 7 600 unnecessary English expressions.

Phraseologies contrary to the spelling system often appear in the titles of TV programs.

Songs sung by pop singers which have a great influence on young people are also censured for marring the meaning of the mother tongue.

It is necessary to take practical measures for preserving and protecting the mother tongue, stressed KBS.
