Ancient Tombs Found in Northern Part of Korea
Pyongyang, September 25 (KCNA) -- Archeologists of the DPRK have recently unearthed a group of tombs dating back to the Palhae Kingdom (698-926) in Korea's history. The tombs are located in the area of Kungsim-dong, Hoeryong City, North Hamgyong Province.

In this regard, KCNA met with Cha Tal Man, chief of an excavation party of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Cha said:

The group, about 300 meters long and 600 meters wide, consists mainly of earthen tombs with stone chambers dating back to Palhae Kingdom. There are also stone graves.

Found in those elliptical or rectangular tombs were scores of relics such as bronze ring, bead, brass bowl, cylindrical jar, plate and other earthenware, believed to be used by the Palhae people.

The Kungsim group of tombs is of weighty significance in study of the history and culture of Palhae Kingdom which succeeded to Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668).

The unearthing work for the ancient tombs is going on now.
