S. Korean Authorities Castigated for Torpedoing Inter-Korean Talks
Pyongyang, June 16 (KCNA) -- 29 organizations of south Korea, including the Association for Supporting Prisoners of Conscience of the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, Buddhist Peace Solidarity, Federation of Peasants Associations, Confederation of Trade Unions, Federation of the Poor, Women's Solidarity and the Federation of University Students in the 21st Century held an emergency press conference on June 12 as regards the talks between the authorities of the north and the south that proved abortive.

At the conference the organizations accused the south side of raising the issue of the "level" of the delegate to the talks at the working contact and designating the delegation head of the north side. The organizations also denounced a high-ranking Chongwadae official for raising controversial points while claiming that "it is hard to build confidence if level is not suitable".

But the "government" once admitted that it was an excessive demand and many experts estimate that the director of the United Front Department of the north side is not the level of the minister of Unification of the south side, they said.

The "government" pushed for the excessive demand for the north side while distorting the fact, an indication of its intention to tame the other party, they noted.

It is hard to understand that the authorities proposed holding the ministerial-level talks from the outset and degraded the level of the chief delegate to vice-minister later, they said.

They urged the "government" to approach the talks between the authorities of the south and the north with the will to implement the joint declarations by prioritizing the common interests of the nation, away from the stand of seeking political goal or escalating confrontation.

They also demanded the authorities lend an ear to loud voices aspiring after improved inter-Korean relations, peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula.
