Indiscriminate Investigation into Human Rights Activist under Fire
Pyongyang, Jun 14 (KCNA) -- Civic organizations in south Korea including the Association for Supporting Prisoners of Conscience of the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy and the People's Solidarity for the Repeal of the "Security Law" held a press conference outside the "Human Rights Committee" on June 11 in protest against the suppression of a human rights activist.

Speeches were made at the conference.

Kwon O Hon, honorary chairman of the Association for Supporting Prisoners of Conscience of the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, said So Su Yong, a human rights activist is still subject to a police investigation after his house was forcibly searched on charges of violation of the "Security Law" in April last for the mere reason that he conducted activities for the release and support to the prisoners of conscience and national reunification for years.

They accused police of making an indiscriminate investigation into his family, adding: This crackdown should be stopped at once as it is suppressing the freedom of expression and encroaching upon human rights.

They demanded the "Human Rights Committee" make a thorough investigation into the case, punish those concerned and take a step against the reoccurrence of the case.

Pak Rae Gun, executive chairman of the People's Solidarity for the Repeal of the "Security Law", noted that what the UN Human Rights Committee noted, to begin with, after examining the human rights performance in south Korea was the problem of the "Security Law" and clarified next the "Human Rights Committee" of south Korea lost its function.

He noted that the human rights issue of south Korea has been put on a chopping board.

Then a press release was read out.

It demanded the Kyonggi Local Police Agency and the South Kyongsang Provincial Branch of the Intelligence Service stop at once the investigation into So Su Yong and human rights abuses against him.
