S. Korean Workers Launch Sit-in Strike
Pyongyang, June 6 (KCNA) -- The Joint Action Headquarters of the Confederation of Trade Unions for Winning Basic Labor Right, Checking Privatization and Intensifying Communality in Public Sector in south Korea entered into a sit-in strike in Youido, Seoul on June 3 in demand of the guarantee for the rights of workers.

At the press conference held prior to the sit-in strike, the organization accused the "government" authorities of not responding to the declaration of the Government Employees Union on forming trade unions. The organization decried the encroachment upon the basic rights of the Teachers Union and pressure put for the revision of rules.

The authorities have closed hospitals for the sake of profits and trampled down the health right of the people, it charged.

The privatization of gas, railway and electricity sectors has widened the gap between the rich and the poor, imposing pain on the common people, the organization said, questioning if it is the "era of people's happiness" trumpeted by the present regime.

The situation again brought home the truth that actions are the only way out, it said, declaring that the workers of the Confederation of Trade Unions in the public sector would stage sit-in strikes outside the building of the "National Assembly" (NA) and conduct candlelight rallies and information activities till July 2.

Then a press release was read out.

It demanded the NA and the regime recognize the right of the workers in the public sector to form organizations and have negotiations on them, and adopt a law on it.

It urged the authorities to stop at once the privatization moves and immediately opt for settling the issue of part-time jobs.
