Tug of War, Traditional Sporting Event of Korea
Pyongyang, February 23 (KCNA) -- The January 15th of the lunar calendar is one of folk holidays for the Koreans, and it falls on February 24 this year.

On the day, the Korean people have traditionally taken such national food as Ogokbap (boiled rice mixed with four other staple cereals), Yakbap (glutinous rice mixed with sugar, dates, chestnuts, pine-nuts, sesame oil, etc.) and dishes made of nine kinds of dried edible herbs, while playing folklore amusement and sporting games.

Typical of those folklore games is tug of war, which is most popular among the people. The game can be played in any place and any time with involvement of many people.

In olden times, this game would be held between different villagers with a rope twisted with rice straw or arrowroot. The twisting was made collectively by villagers. When a game was finished, its winners danced to the tune of farm music with the rope on their shoulders.

The tug of war, considered to be a representation of unity of the collective, is still a favorite sporting event among the Korean people.
