High Sulfur Cast Steel Developed in DPRK
Pyongyang, February 4 (KCNA) -- High sulfur cast steel has been developed by the Rolling-Stock Research Institute under the Branch Academy of Railway Science in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Stronger than gun metal in anti-friction and wear resistance, the cast steel is an alloy of low carbon steel and much of sulfur.

It is applied to sliding bearing, angle screws, worm gears, slider, etc, as an alternative to copper alloy.

With highly-efficient mechanical features, this material is seven times longer than copper alloy in serviceable life.

It costs one tenth of the copper alloy, giving no adverse effect on environment when casting.

The introduction of high sulphur cast steel, a new material better than copper alloy, has gone through industrialization for more than 20 years. It was applied to hundreds of varieties of machines in more than 100 industrial establishments, including Sunchon Cement Complex, Tanchon Magnesia Factory and Wonsan Rolling-Stock Complex. The application saved hundreds of tons of copper.

Its invention was registered as an international patent in September 2012.

The patentee is O Sung Bong, a section chief of the institute.
