Reform of UN Security Council Called for
Pyongyang, January 30 (KCNA) -- There took place an open UN Security Council meeting on the Mid-east issue in the UN on Jan. 23.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Rice insisted that the U.S. can not recognize Palestine's status as non-membership of the UN, when she saw the sign "State of Palestine" set up for a representative of Palestine at the meeting hall.

She even noted that the U.S. does not recognize the UN General Assembly's voting results that granted Palestine the statehood, saying that the use of the sign "State of Palestine" in the UN does not mean that Palestine is recognized as a state.

The U.S. high-handed and arbitrary practices continued throughout the meeting.

Riad Malki, foreign minister of the Palestinian National Authority, said that, to his regret, the UN Security Council failed to fulfill its responsibilities for stopping Israel's aggression acts and protecting Palestinians according to international law at the recent meeting, too.

The Security Council frivols time away over the Palestinian issue whose answer is clear even to a mere child. This is another typical example showing the actual condition of the Security Council which sways to the left and the right, while reading the U.S. face.

No wonder, there is increasing international voices calling for the reform of the UN Security Council.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that the discrimination practiced in the UN, an international body, is an insult to all states, complaining that the Security Council is being swayed over by a small number of countries.

The Cuban permanent representative to the UN called for depriving the permanent member nations of the Security Council of their veto rights, an anachronistic and undemocratic one, at an early date.

Lots of countries including South Africa, Tanzania and India said the Security Council, which is obliged to ensure world peace and security, has become unable to adopt important resolutions, as it serves the interests of some powers including the U.S. They called for the immediate reform of the Security Council for the respect for the view of its member nations and the proper settlement of international issues.
