Tangun founded Ancient Korea (30th century B.C.-108 B.C.), the first state in Korea with a history of 5 000 years which was well-known as a powerful country in the East.

So, the Koreans would observe this Foundation Day with significant events, through which they demonstrated themselves as a homogeneous nation with a long history and excellent culture.

Tangun had been regarded as a myth due to the wrong attitude of the corrupt and incompetent feudal rulers and the Japanese aggressors and reactionary historians' persistent moves to distort the historical facts.

It was President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il who found out the ancestral father of the nation and glorified Korea as a time-honored country. They indicated a clear-cut way for unearthing the remains of Tangun, regarding him as a real person, and saw to it that his remains unearthed were verified on a scientific basis.

Kim Jong Il led the work to splendidly rebuild the Mausoleum of King Tangun, true to the behests of Kim Il Sung.

On Oct. 3 every year, a commemorative event takes place before the mausoleum in Kangdong County, Pyongyang.
