Anniversary of Fact-finding Group for Forcible Drafting of Koreans Observed
Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- A meeting was held in Tokyo on August 18 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the formation of the fact-finding group for forcible drafting of Koreans.

Among those present there were O Kyu Sang, vice-director of the Institute for the Study of the History of Koreans in Japan, Ri Tong Je, chairman of the Society of Koreans in Japan for Peaceful Reunification, members of the Korean Social Scientists Association in Japan, officials of organizations and enterprises of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), officials of Chongryon and compatriots in various parts of Japan and Japanese people.

The floor was taken by representative from the Korean side Pak Ku Ho, vice-chairman of the Central Standing Committee and concurrently chairman of the Rights and Welfare Committee of Chongryon.

He recalled that over the last four decades the group has conducted activities to clarify the history of damage done to Koreans in Japan during Japan's colonial rule and lay a groundwork for having human rights issues settled.

He accused the Japanese government of working hard to distort and conceal Japan's past war of aggression and crimes it committed against humanity still today when the Koreans mark the 67th anniversary of the country's liberation and the 10th anniversary of the publication of the DPRK-Japan Pyongyang Declaration. He cited as examples Japan's moves to justify its past colonial rule and approval of the use of textbooks which deleted the sexual slavery for the Imperial Japanese Army and monstrous massacre of Koreans during the Kanto Great Quake, etc.

The meeting heard a report entitled "Four decades of activities conducted by the fact-finding group which serve as a cornerstone for protecting the rights of Koreans in Japan" made by Akihiro Harada, co-representative of the Central Headquarters of the Japanese side to the group, and reports delivered by Kim Tong Hak, secretary general of the Human Rights Association of Koreans in Japan, Prof. Michio Sano of Housen University of Children's Education, and Etsuro Totsuka, former professor of Ryukoku University, respectively.

An appeal was adopted at the meeting. It called for furthering the survey of the forcible drafting to carry on energetic activities to reinstate the victims and ensure the dignity of Koreans in Japan and get their legal status established.
