Heavy Rains Bring Serious Damage to DPRK
Pyongyang, August 22 (KCNA) -- There were heavy rainfalls and downpours again in the DPRK from the late evening of August 17 to the morning of August 20.

It rained 499 mm in Phyongsan County, 432 mm in Singye County and 360 mm in Sinphyong County in North Hwanghae Province, 494 mm in Sepho County and 433 mm in Ichon County in Kangwon Province, 303 mm in Pongchon County, South Hwanghae Province, and 285 mm in Phyongsong City, South Phyongan Province. It also rained much in Pyongyang and Nampho cities and South Hamgyong Province.

According to an initial survey, 3 people were confirmed dead, more than 170 houses and 30 public buildings destroyed and at least 2 740 hectares of cropland inundated, buried or washed away in North Hwanghae Province.

The rain-triggered flood caused 2 190 cubic meters of mudslide in 38 places, leaving 6 bridges and railroad extending 1 160 meters destroyed in the province.

In South Phyongan Province, the flood left 3 people dead, some 300 houses and 30 public and factory buildings destroyed or submerged.

Some 140 sections of roads were covered by mudslide and six bridges damaged in the province.

In South Hwanghae Province, the downpour claimed casualties and wrecked a railway bridge, causing temporary stoppage of railway service.

In Kangwon Province, a number of houses and public buildings were submerged and 280 hectares of farmland battered by flood.

Unha, Kwisong and other salterns were inundated and roads broken in Nampho City.
