Relief Activity in Anju City of DPRK
Pyongyang, August 6 (KCNA) -- The Red Cross Society of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea launched a relief work in flood-hit Anju City, South Phyongan Province.

Choe Yong Chol, chief of the Anju City branch of the society, told KCNA:

"Downpour swept Anju City in late July. To make it worse, water level of the river running across the city rapidly rose, affected by the high tide of the West Sea of Korea, exceeding the river's banks.

The flooding left many houses and hectares of cropland submerged and educational, healthcare and communications facilities, water supply and drainage system, roads and railways destroyed."

Kim Song Il, chief of the hygienic water team of the Red Cross Society Central Committee, said:

"A relief work to stabilize the life of flood victims is now under way in the city.

Mobile water purifiers are installed in two locations to supply drinking water.

Red Cross volunteers delivered relief supplies, including tents, quilts and daily necessities, to flood victims while conducting hygienic information activities among them to prevent possible outbreak of diseases."

The DPRK Red Cross Society is making a survey of damage in the flood-hit areas across the country, in cooperation with members of the delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies active in the DPRK.

It also sent reserved relief supplies to inhabitants in the afflicted areas of Kangwon, North and South Hamgyong and North Phyongan provinces and other parts of the country.
