Women Enjoy Rights Equal to Men in DPRK
Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- Women in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are enjoying the rights equal to men in all social realms.

It was after the liberation of Korea from the Japanese colonial rule that the DPRK women could begin honoring their dignity.

In the period of building new Korea, President Kim Il Sung set it as a major task in making democratic revolution to emancipate the women from social inequalities.

First of all, he saw to it that a women's union was formed to embrace broad sections of women and enlighten them. And he often met with officials of the union to teach that gender equality should be won by the women's own efforts.

He also showed so deep care for the enforcement of various socio-economic reforms, including the agrarian reform, that the sex equality could be ensured in their application.

On July 30, Juche 35 (1946), he promulgated "Law on Sexual Equality in North Korea."

The law stipulated that women had the same rights with men in elections, labor, education, property inheritance and all other social spheres. In particular, it prohibits feudal customs which were abusive of the women's human rights.

The promulgation of the law was as good as a declaration on the women's emancipation that marked a turning point in their life.
