The statement recalled that the Supreme Court on July 5 turned down the indictment raised by Kangjong villagers in connection with the base construction.

The villagers demanded a stop to the project, saying that the "minister of Defense" did not make a correct assessment of impact the approval of the construction plan will have on environment but committed illegal acts. The Supreme Court stood by the military authorities, saying that something went wrong in assessing the impact on environment but it is not so much erroneous as to nullify the approval.

It is an illegal act not to accept the opinions of villagers while ruthlessly destroying environment on Jeju Island, the statement said, condemning the Supreme Court for its judgment disregarding the villagers.
