Enforcement of Tobacco Control Law in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has pushed ahead with the work to enforce the tobacco control law in order to prevent the aftereffects of smoking on health, environment and economic life.

Pak Myong Su, head of the State Sanitary Inspection Board under the Ministry of Public Health, told KCNA:

"The tobacco control law of the DPRK was adopted in July Juche 94 (2005) and revised in December 2009.

The law specifies the regulations and policies on tobacco control, including articles that call for fixing smoking places and keeping them clean in a hygienic way and banning ads on tobacco."

Seminars and workshops have taken place in a planned manner to enforce the tobacco control law.

A seminar on prevention and control of non-contagious diseases held in August last year discussed multi-faceted cooperation over the issues arising in prohibiting smoking.

Non-smoking research centers, built in the capital city of Pyongyang and two provinces, are conducting their brisk activities, including research and development of no-tobacco goods and consultation with smokers.

TV, radio and other media of the country give wide publicity to harmfulness of tobacco and importance of non-smoking campaign on World No-Tobacco Day (May 31) every year. Also, a work is going on to print and disseminate literatures on non-smoking.

On the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day this year, various events took place in Pyongyang under the theme of "Tobacco Industry Interference" set by the World Health Organization. They included an action of explaining about the tobacco control law to be abided by tobacco producers.
