Environmental Protection Encouraged in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 26 (KCNA) -- The Environmental Protection Institute under the Ministry of Land and Environmental Conservation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has been stepping up the researches to remove air pollution and conserve clean water and forest ecology.

Ri Kyong Sim, director of the Institute, told KCNA:

The Institute has already made big achievements in the researches into environmental protection.

It has steadily updated the support program for air environmental management to correctly assess the level of air pollution in Pyongyang and prevent possible air pollution.

It finished making a design of the equipment to arrest above 98 percent of dust and harmful gas from the industrial establishments across the country and is now pressing ahead with its manufacture.

The Institute developed an additive to gasoline to reduce auto exhaust fumes and succeeded in inventing a pathogenic waste matter disposal device.

An environment-friendly waste water treatment plant has been built at the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex, which is to remove oil from industrial spent water in reliance on plants.

On the basis of scientific selection of protective species of plants, the Institute wrote the book "Collection of Plants in the DPRK" (extinctive and rare plants), which is conducive to protection of biodiversity.

At present the Institute is intensifying the researches into eco-environment characteristics and rational management of natural parks in the country.
