ower to Waterway Project Erected
Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- A tower to the waterway project was successfully erected atop a hill in Janghung- ri of Sukchon County, South Phyongan Province.

It was erected under the plan of General Secretary Kim Jong Il and on his initiative. It is crystal of his profound loving care and a monument in the Songun era as it was erected to convey down to posterity the feats performed by service personnel of the People's Army and members of the shock brigade in building gravity-fed waterways by fully displaying the revolutionary soldier spirit and the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude.

More than 4,200 pieces of granites were contributed to the tower 42.5 meters high depicting rice plants drooping ears on the life-giving water. Engraved on its front side are letters "Tower to the waterway project" and a poem conveying the undying feats of the three commanders of Mt. Paektu. Depicted in relief are service personnel and builders who devoted themselves to the waterway construction and happy agricultural workers doing farming free from worry about water shortage.

On display in the room for the education in the revolutionary history are relics on the leadership provided by the great persons of Mt. Paektu over the establishment of the irrigation system in the country. They include the feats President Kim Il Sung performed by unfolding a new history of irrigation. He initiated a grandiose nature-remaking project for irrigation in South Phyongan Province and worked heart and soul for its materialization.

A monument to the field guidance given by Kim Jong Il to Minam Plain in Sukchon County was also erected.

Its unveiling ceremony took place on the spot on Friday.

It was attended by Kim Ki Nam, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Ri Chol Man, vice-premier of the Cabinet, Ri Myong Gil, chairman of the C.C., the Union of Agricultural Workers, Ri Kyong Sik, minister of Agriculture, An Kuk Thae, chairman of the South Phyongan Provincial People's Committee, and officials concerned, members of the shock brigade engaged in the tower construction, officials and other working people in South Phyongan Province and Sukchon County.

Hong In Bom, chief secretary of the south Phyongan Provincial Committee of the WPK, made an address for the occasion.

Then the participants looked round the tower, the room for the education in the revolutionary history, the monument, etc. after being briefed on the tower.
