S. Koreans Demand Stop to Naval Base Construction
Pyongyang, May 10 (KCNA) -- 78 south Koreans including the president of the Catholic Priests' Council and an honorary professor of Seoul National University made public an appeal demanding a stop to the construction of a naval base on Jeju Island on May 7.

The appeal accused the military of illegally pressing ahead with the construction despite opposition of residents on Jeju Island.

The "government" authorities claim that if the naval base is completed, civilians will also use it, the appeal said, adding that this is nothing but deception and the Jeju naval base is a military port in every sense.

The appeal voiced opposition to the construction of the naval base, a threat to the peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, Kangjong Village Society and the All-islanders Measure Committee for Checking Jeju Military Base Construction held a press conference outside the Jeju provincial office on the same day at which they strongly demanded a halt to the construction.
