US Rejected in Continent
Pyongyang, April 24 (KCNA) -- The 6th summit of the Organization of American States (OAS) was held in Cartagena, Colombia on April 14 and 15.

The U.S. sought to turn the summit into a platform for isolating Cuba, sowing seeds of discord among Latin American countries and bolstering up its weakened influence in the region.

Cuba was excluded from the OAS in 1962 due to the U.S. pressure and plots. Even since a decision on lifting the exclusion was made in 2009 thanks to strong demand of regional countries, the U.S. has refused to give the status of full member to Cuba, asserting that democracy in the country is not in line with what it called charter.

When the U.S. barred Cuba from taking part in the summit, the regional countries stood firm against it in unity.

The presidents of Venezuela, Ecuador and Nicaragua protested the U.S. by boycotting the summit, declaring that a regional meeting without Cuba is impossible.

The summit held against this background further aggravated the conflict between Latin American countries and the U.S.

When the U.S. objected to mentioning in the final declaration the urgent issues of meeting the interests of the region including the issue of Cuba's participation in the next round of the summit, regional countries strongly opposed the U.S. stance in group.

The presidents of Colombia, Bolivia and other countries in their speeches branded the moves to isolate and blockade against Cuba as a product of the Cold War era, declaring such summit would never be held in the future.

The summit ended without adopting a final declaration because of differences between Latin American countries and the U.S.

The international community derides the U.S. driven into a tight corner for having pursued an anachronistic hegemonic policy.
