National Sports Festival for Mangyongdae Prize Opens
Pyongyang, April 6 (KCNA) -- A national sports festival for Mangyongdae Prize was opened with due ceremony at Kim Il Sung Stadium Friday to commemorate the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung.

During the festival its participants will compete in some 40 events including soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, weightlifting, judo, gymnastics, track-and-field, swimming, archery and figure skating. They will take place in Pyongyang, Phyongsong, Wonsan, Nampho, Samjiyon and other areas.

Pak Myong Chol, minister of Physical Culture and Sports, in his opening address called on all sportspersons and coaches to glorify the revolutionary career and exploits of great persons of Mt. Paektu and prove successful in physical culture and sports this year. He then declared the festival open.

The speakers called upon the sportspersons and coaches to brush up Korean-style sports techniques through ideological, fighting spirit, speed and technical campaigns and thus demonstrate before the whole world the dignity and honor of Kim Il Sung's nation and Kim Jong Il's Korea with gold medals.

There was a demonstration performance of parachutists of the Pyongyang Aviation Club and men's football match between the Sobaeksu Sports Group and the sports group of the Ministry of Light Industry.
