Stop to Naval Base Construction Urged in S. Korea
Pyongyang, February 28 (KCNA) -- The People for Achieving Peace and Reunification in south Korea sent a letter of protest to the prime minister on Feb. 25 calling for stopping the naval base construction on Jeju Island.

After Lee Myung Bak clarified his stand to hasten the Jeju naval base construction at a special press conference on the 4th year of his office, the ministry of defense, the navy and the police have pressed for the construction, the letter said.

The authorities' push for the construction despite the unanimous opposition of the people would only bring terrible results, it said.

The construction of the base will pollute the natural environment and threaten the peace of Northeast Asia, leaving only pains in the hearts of the islanders, it added.

The letter accused the authorities of raising groundless reasons to convince the public of the necessity of the naval base, and urged them to stop the construction with immediate effect, though belatedly.
