Anti-Japanese Sentiment Grows Stronger in Korea
Pyongyang, February 27 (KCNA) -- Resentment toward Japan is growing stronger among the Koreans on the lapse of 136 years since Japan cooked up unequal "Korea-Japan Defence Provisions" ("Kanghwa Island Treaty").

At that time, Japan caused the warship "Unyo-maru" incident for the purpose of fabricating the treaty.

After illegally infiltrating by "Unyo-maru" into the waters off the Kanghwa Island of Korea in September 1875, the Japanese pirates attacked the Chojijin battery on the island and intruded into Jongsan and Yongjong islets. And they set fire to houses and robbed inhabitants of their property before being punished by Korean garrison.

This notwithstanding, the Japanese invaders threatened the feudal government of Korea with artillery pieces and warships, asserting that the Korean side did a hostile act toward Japan and it should compensate for the damage of "Unyo-maru". They finally forced the feudal government to conclude the 12-point "Kanghwa Island Treaty" in February 1876.

The treaty, the keynote of which called on the Korean side to open harbors for Japan and allow it to survey seas around Korea and draw marine chart, was aimed at political, economic and military occupation of Korea.

Historical data on the atrocities done by the Japanese invaders at that time are on display at the National House of Class Education in Pyongyang.

Yu Jong Hui, a worker of the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex, told KCNA that she came to get a better knowledge of the shameless and gangster-like nature of the Japanese imperialists through visit to the house.

Japan should apologize and make reparation for its past crimes, she urged.

Kim Chung Guk, a soldier of the Korean People's Army, said that Japan has not yet abandoned its wild ambition for reinvasion of Korea, openly revealing the scheme to seize the Tok Islets, part of Korea's territory.

"For the Korean nation's dignity and honor, we will surely force Japan to settle its crime-woven past and smash the Japanese imperialists' moves to grab the islets," he added.
