Ice Rink Hosts International Figure Skating Festival
Pyongyang, January 16 (KCNA) -- The International Figure Skating Festival for Paektusan Prize takes place before full houses each year at the Ice Rink in Pyongyang to commemorate General Secretary Kim Jong Il's birthday, February 16.

The Ice Rink was opened to mark President Kim Il Sung's 70th birthday on the initiative of Kim Jong Il.

The cone-shaped building, situated on the banks of the Pothong River, has a floor space of more than 25,000 square meters and 6,000 seats.

In the basement there are lounges, training rooms, referees' room, gymnastic apparatus repair shop, clinic, soft drink stand and offices.

The Ice Rink has another building for training used by both players and amateurs.

Many international and domestic tournaments have been held since its opening.

Leader Kim Jong Il visited the Ice Rink on December 4, 2011, before his demise, with the dear respected Kim Jong Un and enjoyed a figure skating demonstration. That day he gave important instructions for the development of ice sports.
