Hunminjongum, Korean Alphabet, Created in 15th Century
Pyongyang, January 16 (KCNA) -- 568 years has passed since Hunminjongum, the Korean alphabet, was created.

The word Hunminjongum means upright instructions for teaching the people.

It was made by scholars under deep concern of King Sejong in January 1444.

Its main characters were 28, with 17 consonants and 11 vowels.

Its alphabetical order was scientifically arranged, with a clear-cut structure and system.

Easy to write and speak, it can fully express vocal sounds.

The creation of Hunminjongum provided conditions for formulating regulations of the Korean national language and ensuring unity in linguistic life.

The Korean people were almost deprived of their language by the policy of obliterating Korean, pursued by the Japanese imperialists during their colonial rule over Korea (1905-1945).

After the country's liberation, President Kim Il Sung advanced a policy of independently developing the national language in line with the requirements of the revolution and construction.

General Secretary Kim Jong Il indicated fundamental principles and ways for developing socialist national language and paid deep attention to linguistic research work.

Now the Korean language is appreciated as a model national one, cultured and popular.
