Pyongyang Takes on New Look
Pyongyang, January 5 (KCNA) -- The joint New Year editorial calls for ushering in a new heyday of Pyongyang in the Songun (military-first) era.

The editorial says that to improve the appearance of Pyongyang is an important project to greet the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung in grand style and leader Kim Jong Il's earnest behest.

To that effect, the editorial calls on the people to step up the construction in the Mansudae area and other major projects under construction on the highest level and effect a radical turn in urban management and landscaping.

The history of building Pyongyang is characterized by an admirable construction speed.

It took only 14 minutes to assemble a flat in the 1950s, which was called Pyongyang speed.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Changgwang and Kwangbok streets made their appearances in the city.

In the 1990s, an average of 200 flats were assembled a day in the construction of Thongil Street.

In recent ten years, a number of cultural and service centers, including Taedongmun Cinema and Okryu and Chongryu restaurants, were reconstructed on a modern basis and Mansudae Street built with high-rise apartment houses.
