Joint New Year Editorial Calls for Promoting Sports Development
Pyongyang, January 3 (KCNA) -- The joint New Year editorial released in the DPRK indicates a way for promoting the sports development of the country.

It calls for increasing the heated enthusiasm for sports by enhancing public interest in physical culture and sports and making them part of people's everyday life and habit.

The call is motivated by the intention to make the country a football power and sports power by encouraging all people to take part in sports activities and producing many competent reserve sportspersons.

Diverse mass sports events took place in the country last year, raising public interest in sports and training many up-and-coming sportspersons.

Sportspersons scored good results in international tournaments last year, bagging many gold medals in weightlifting, wrestling, shooting, marathon, boxing, track-and-field and other events.

The DPRK boys were qualified for the 2012 Asian U-16 and U-19 football championships and girls for the 2012 Olympic Games and for the 2012 U-20 Women's World Cup.

The country won 4 trophies, 19 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 3 bronze medals to finish first in the team standings in the 17th ITF World Taekwon-Do Championship, which took place in Pyongyang in September last year.
